Local opporunties
El Centro de las Americas - Providing "services in the areas of education, family support, strengthening of youth, health, domestic violence, and general support for clients." El Centro helps community members with citizenship and GED classes, as well as a focus on health with classes ranging from Zumba to substance abuse. Opportunities include: volunteering as an English teacher for adult learners, as mentor for high school students or at the various events throughout the year.
Rotary Club of Lincoln - "Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities. In Lincoln we're helping make a difference in one of our more challenged schools, Everett Elementary. Internationally we're involved in projects in Namibia, Zambia, The Dominican Republic, Kenya and Rotary International's initiative to eradicate Polio."
Nebraskans for Peace - "Nebraskans for Peace is a statewide grassroots advocacy organization working nonviolently for Peace with Justice through community building, education and political action."
The Lincoln chapter is currently working on the treatment of immigrants and refugees to the community, overall equity, gay and lesbian issues, and peace studies within the LPS curriculum.
Ponca Tribe of Nebraska - Learn more about the Ponca Tribe in Nebraska via the many programs offered. There is an annual PowWow that promises to "brings all of us together to our ancestral homeland to share, celebrate, reminisce and pass our knowledge and traditions on to future generation". One of the issues the the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is currently working is the "Buffalo Program" to reintroduce bison to their native homeland.
Re-Member - "Re-Member takes its name from the ancient definition, to "put back that which is broken; to re-member." Conditions on Pine Ridge represent a part of our world that is broken, a part that we seek to put back together." This organization offers week long volunteer trips to bring awareness to the culture as well as help improve conditions on Pine Ridge. Projects include wheelchair ramps, bunk beds, trailer skirting and livable homes.
Asian Community and Cultural Center - Providing "Immigrants in Lincoln and surrounding areas will have access to the resources and support they need to lead better lives" Opportunities include: volunteering as an English teacher for adult learners, as mentor for high school students or at the various events throughout the year. Visitors are also welcome to the "Cultural Bazaar" every second Saturday of the month. The bazaar is a great place to sample food and music and purchase jewelry, ornaments and clothing.

Teaching Tolerance - Offering affordable (often FREE!) resources for teachers on navigating difficult yet important topics of discussion. From posters, to movies, to lesson ideas and even professional development courses. Check out this website to enhance your students' global perspectives.
U.N. SDGs - To become more versed in the United Nations "Sustainable Development Goals" of 2030 visit their website. I am confident many teachers would find that their students have an interest in knowing more about SDGs and how they can contribute. We plan on using SDGs and the resources on this page to drive discussions in our Global Voices group.
The World's Largest Lesson - My favorite resource! I love the way this site is organized. Teachers are able to click on any SDG to view lesson plans and resources on that SDG.
iEarn - This site is very cool and offers a lot of potential. I am hoping to give one of the projects a try soon. Your students can be partnered up with another school somewhere in the world to collaborate on a single project. It is organized well--from the launch of the project to the collecting and sharing of data/information. "iEARN-USA has pioneered the use of the Internet and other innovative technologies to engage youth worldwide in collaborative project-based learning to address curriculum subjects and take action on global issues."

"Empatico empowers teachers and students to explore the world through experiences that spark curiosity, kindness, and empathy. We combine live video with activities to foster meaningful connections among students ages 7-11." Activities range from getting to know yous, to landmarks, to energy and weather.
